I've decided to try my hand at blogging. Perhaps this will allow me to avoid facebook but still communicate with my loved ones. My daughters have been writing for a few months and it's a breath of fresh air. I often think of things to write as I am out rambling... and then forget after time goes by. At my age, forgetting is something I worry about and so perhaps if I can write and add some photos, I won't forget.
This weekend we hiked on the sand dunes near our house inWassenaar, Netherlands just inland from the North Sea. The dunes have fresh water lakes interspersed between the grassy covered slopes. The oceanfront looked forbidding with large waves crashing on a deserted beach strand. Despite the dark clouds we managed our circuitous route out to the coast and back just before the rain, hail and winds set in.We found ourselves in a little cafe within Meindel park where we ordered our apple tarts. The cafe had a central circular fireplace with lounge chairs about and was surrounded by other families enjoying a weekend outing. All very Dutch and cozy. While sitting there, we noticed an interesting dish people were ordering. After finding out about Jagersmaal from our server, we ordered one to share after dessert. Why Not? Jagersmaal is special to this place-- a large bowl of fries, topped with grilled onions, bacon and a fried egg on top ( but only slightly cooked). Minus the egg, it was tasty but I would call it a "heart attack." Did I mention it comes with mayonnaise? If I can figure out about the pictures, I will add them. We have been trying to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastal area where we live either by bike or boots. Once you can adapt to the northern European weather, you can ensure yourself a beautiful journey.
